FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KANSAS CITY, Kan.: Kansas City, Kansas, will celebrate its first-ever Black Restaurant Week Sept. 7-13, featuring 11 Black-owned restaurants. The event concludes on 913 Day, Sunday, September 13.
913 Day, celebrated annually on Sept. 13, honors the people, culture, history and local businesses of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas. Named for the area's 913 area code, the celebration highlights the people and places that make the community unique.
Locals and visitors can use the week to discover restaurants throughout Wyandotte County and experience everything from barbecue and soul food to pizza, coffee and more.
Participating restaurants include:
-
The Neighborhood Eats
-
Nana's Kitchen
Select participating restaurants will offer $9.13 specials in recognition of 913 Day. Black Restaurant Week will lead into 913 Day by spotlighting local Black-owned restaurants and the entrepreneurs behind them.
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, has recognized Black Restaurant Week through a proclamation from Mayor/CEO Christal E. Watson. The proclamation highlights the role Black-owned restaurants play in Wyandotte County's cultural heritage, economic vitality and community identity.
The celebration comes as Kansas City, Kansas, continues to recover from the severe storms that moved through Wyandotte County Aug. 18-19. The storms caused widespread damage, including power outages and disruptions for local businesses.
Several participating restaurants have also stepped up during the recovery. Turkey Leggman continued serving customers with a limited menu following the storm and donated food to utility crews working to restore power in the Quindaro area. Wilson's Pizza & Grill distributed food that provided hundreds of grab-and-go meals to people affected by the storms.
For restaurants and businesses across KCK, the week provides an opportunity to reconnect with customers as the community continues its recovery.
Black Restaurant Week will run Sept. 7-13. Locals and visitors are encouraged to check with individual restaurants for hours, menus and $9.13 specials.
