One of the most notable features of the district is its blend of culture, diversity and history. Stroll along Minnesota Avenue, known locally as the “Avenue of Murals,” where colorful outdoor art celebrates the heritage and historical events that helped shape Kansas City, Kansas.
At the center of downtown is the Wyandott National Burying Ground, a sacred site for the Wyandot Nation and the resting place of the notable Conley sisters and their ancestors. The grounds remain an important gathering place and a powerful reminder of the area’s Indigenous history.
Just south of downtown sits the historic Strawberry Hill neighborhood. This area got its name because it was supposedly once covered in wild strawberry fields, but is most known for the Eastern-European immigrants who settled here in the 1800s. Today, the Strawberry Hill Museum & Cultural Center showcases the cultural stories of those who came to Kansas City, Kansas and made it their home. In recent years, Strawberry Hill has gained popular for being the dive bar hub of Kansas City.
Food lovers will want to head to Central Avenue. This bustling culinary corridor is filled with taquerias, bakeries and family-run eateries, many of which can be found on the KCK Taco Trail. The afternoon rush often spills onto the sidewalks as locals line up for authentic street tacos from long-loved spots like El Torito. No visit to KCK is complete without award-winning barbecue!
