As the New Year begins, with it comes an air of excitement, fresh starts and new beginnings. What better way to enhance your list of plans and goals than to seek out new experiences that exist right outside your own front door. January in Kansas City, Kansas brings about several fun activities that you probably haven’t considered or possibly even been aware of until now.  I urge you to broaden your horizons and clear a little space in your calendar to take advantage of these great local events happening this month.

We all know Kansas City is the Barbecue capital of the world. Some people would say Texas, others might say Memphis, but they’d be wrong. Kansas City is King. However, I also believe KC is Earth’s sauce capital. This town has so many different bbq joints each with their own unique flavor, that uniqueness comes from the sauce. Some are spicy, some sweet, some sauce is so hot it will make you rethink your entire life. Whatever type you like; Kansas City has it, and it's good.

Cold weather months don’t have to mean that all of your family’s fun and travel are put on pause. Since the time around holidays and the New Year can be so chaotic, our family often finds that this is when we need to disconnect from our daily life and unwind more than ever. We did just that as we celebrated our daughter Caelyn’s birthday at Great Wolf Lodge! She was turning 4 years old, and we wanted to make it a special adventure for her.

Barbecue and tacos are without a doubt the first types of cuisine outsiders think of first when they hear Kansas City, KS. However it’s a local secret that delicious, piping-hot pizza is never too far from reach. October is National Pizza Month! In Kansas City, KS you’ll find plenty of spots to grab your slice of the pie.

Fall family outings have a way of attaching themselves to your memories for a lifetime. Maybe it’s the alluring aroma of fall, or perhaps it’s the crisp contrast of the fall colors. Whatever the case, I’ve found that fall can help produce some of the most special moments with family and friends. This year we didn’t have to look far to find an adventure. We simply packed up the family and headed to Kansas City, KS for what would become one of our family’s most fun adventures!

This past weekend I combined two of my very favorite fall activities: nature hikes and haunted houses. It was certainly an October evening to remember. Nothing beats spending time in nature at the on-set of chilly fall weather - leaves crunching under your feet and the faint smell of burning wood somewhere in the distance. Paired with an eerie, unfamiliar path and over 45 minutes of being chased, frightened and thoroughly disturbed, you’ve got the ultimate heart-pounding experience.

Do you like to exercise? Do you like to eat? I like to do both so I thought I'd check out the Armourdale Hike & Bike Route (exercise) and El Pollo Rey (eating). Those two activities alone take up roughly eighty percent of my day, but it's time well spent. So put on your exercise shorts and your eating bib and do as I do, or don't, but you definitely should.

If someone asked me a few years ago for a great place to go for coffee I probably would suggest somewhere other than Kansas City, KS. Sure - there were a couple Starbucks locations, gas stations and other franchise spots to help cure the afternoon lull, but a quaint, quiet spot to read or chat with a friend? You’d probably be better off searching elsewhere in KC. However, if you were to ask me today, my answer would be entirely different. It seems as if recently local coffee shops and cafes have been popping up all about my beloved KCK.
